Introducing Dandy Light Shields for Broiler House Sidewall Inlets.
The Situation -
In the past few years, more and more poultry companies have adopted light control programs as a means of helping control broiler activity and feed intake. The reason: they have found to enhance bird performance. Broiler light control programs vary quite a bit in details from one company to another, but many call for a continuous fairly high light level for the first week or so, then taper light down to a low " brown-out" level, keeping light at the floor around 0.2 to 0.25 foot-candles(FC)
The Problem -
Broiler houses with sidewall inlets have not been very successful with lighting programs because the ventilation program calls for bringing air in through the sidewall inlets, opening of the inlet doors lets too much light light into the house. During minimum ventilation, when timers are constantly opening and closing the inlets, we see changes in light intensity at the floor level every few minutes. As birds get older and the ventilation program calls for pulling air through the vent boxes with tunnel fans on, the open inlet doors allow light to stream into the house for long periods. In both cases, lighting program goals are defeated and non-uniformity of the light causes stress in the flock.
The Solution -
Dandy light shields installed on the exterior of the house over the sidewall inlets offer an inexpensive way of keeping light from entering through the inlets, without interfering with ventilation.
Independent third- party tests on a bright sunny morning, with outside light intensity at 4,500 foot-candles, showed that light intensity on the floor of a broiler house fitted with Dandy light shields never exceed 0.2 foot-candles. This excellent level of broiler house brown-out was achieved with minium interferance to the ventilation system performance.
